| Bali Bombing - Close to Home
†
October 2002
Bali - my heart goes out to all those who have lost
loved ones, and otherwise been affected by these events. I won't
speak on how effective Indonesia might be at finding those responsible.
Nor why further training such a country in the skills of Counter
Terrorism only makes them more effective terrorists themselves.
And they can still tell us all the reasons why the
defense forces are in a fine state and there is no need to do any
more than is already envisioned. We can equip the Army with state
of the art air conditioned wheeled tonka toys, while the Navy suffers
the indignant knowledge that it is well served to operate all over
the world yet does not have the capacity to patrol its own nation's
vast coast line.
A bomb threat in Dunedin has the New Zealand police
on a very professional 'she'll be right no worries, we'll get the
Army in from Burnham tomorrow' tangent. Over 300 kilometres away.
But there, my old unit based in Oamaru has been reverted from Assault
Pioneers to regular infantry thanks to the wisdom of defense cuts.
Oamaru is a mere hour away. Don't worry, a bomb like that of Bali
won't happen in New Zealand much less Dunedin so, no problems there.
She''ll be right mate. What a load of bollocks.
And a mate had this to say of the following...
And we are gullible enough to continue giving our
money to the likes of the UN and the Red Cross eh. Human misery
is a racket run by criminals posing as human rights groups. Here's
the proof.
An internal report by the International Monetary
Fund (IMF) has found that nearly $1bn disappeared from Angolan Government
finances last year. The sum is far greater than the value of humanitarian
assistance sent to the country this year and the report adds that
over the past five years a total of over $4bn are unaccounted for.
Angola has often been accused of corruption in the past, but this
is the first time that financial mismanagement on such a scale has
been reported by an institution with the status of the IMF. The
International Monetary Fund's stark assessment of the Angolan government's
finances are revealed in a report circulated earlier this year within
the IMF, and obtained recently by the BBC.
Seems a bit like the deal with feed the children
etc. Seems that most of the money good people donate is sucked up
by beuracrats and office workers who certainly don't lack three
meals a day.
CNN has learned... bloody hell, Mister Hussien
doesn't need to worry himself about military intelligence gathering.
He just needs to read US Newspapers. Hell's bells. When will the
media ever learn? They are quite happy to report about US Special
Forces training in this country and that, doing this in preparation
and doing that. And quite willing for 'their boys' to go out and
spill blood for them while they sit at home in their comfy chairs.
They'll be spilling a lot more blood if these reporters don't get
it together and be a great deal more decerning about what they report.
Doesn't the historical statement 'lose lips sinks ships' mean anything?
Oh that's right the people have a right to know. Like hell they
do. There is a reason such things are not meant to be reported.
Sort it out. I suppose it would be sorted if it was your homes and
families that were about to be attacked.
So now the rebels in Russia do what they do and
we will talk nicely to them and everything will be fine. FSB, I
hope the offer of not endangering their lives on surrender is defunct.
Otherwise they will escape, and do the same thing again. A bit like
threatening those 'snipers' in the US with the death penalty. Cripes,
they want that. They want to be martyrs. Its not a threat its a
privilege, an honour. Probably voluntarily give themselves up to
produce a false sense of security so another couple of murderers'
can go out there and do the same again. Terrorism is the fear to
leave one's house, to walk your dog or even sleep at night. It doesn't
have to be a massive attack like 9/11. It is control by fear. It
can be done by any ethnic group, any race, in any country, by any
institution.
Good to hear that the Russians did it right. People
died and that is very unfortunate, but all up the outcome was much
better than it could have been. While we have extremists roaming
about it will remain an unfortunate course of action where lethal
force will need to be used. Remembering that, regardless of any
judgments on government policy or whatever, if a extremist decides
to pick up a rifle and murder innocents or take them hostage, then
the consequences will be what they will. Don't judge a soldier for
the measures that must be taken.
Since the Indonesian submarines are not a concern
perhaps we need to go back in time...
Thursday 13th 1940 : Armed merchant-cruiser
Scotstown is torpedoed by U-25 off Ireland, 6 crew lost. The British
submarine Odin is sunk by the Italian destroyer Strale in Gulf
of Taranto. The German raider Orion lays mines off Auckland, New
Zealand.
Oh, what, what was that??? Auckland, New Zealand,
no.
Why is it that so many people out there seem to
have it in for the military here? Suddenly for some reason because
a soldier loses his foot this is why we shouldn't be involved in
'someone else's war'. Excuse me but is Bali not good enough? Perhaps
you need it to happen at home to realise it is EVERYONES' war? And
someone decides to make a career in the military. But as soon as
he goes overseas and does his job he is doing something wrong? So
if a fireman or a Search and Rescue specialist goes overseas to
help out, say an Indian earthquake, a South American flood or whatever
and they happen to be injured or killed... that's okay. But a soldier
who does the same thing, somehow that's not right. Some people are
so selfish. And yet the same people are quite happy for our military
to be totally under equipped, and under paid, just so long as they
do their job on our own shores. It defies belief really. A fireman
has a ceiling collapse on him, that's terrible. A soldier gets shot
preventing militia raping and murdering and pillaging some foreign
community, like East Timor, and 'he shouldn't be there'. To me that
kind of two faced rubbish is a excellent example of just why humanity
is in the state it's currently in. Yet they would expect the same
soldiers' to die for them defending their own families and homes.
As a student I get $150 a week. To be unemployed
one of my age gets $170 plus a week. If you think that's nuts then
consider this : I can get nailed for for a weeks stand down, at
the conclusionn of a year's study. Then If I do something bad like
work under the table in order to get a bit beyond the basics of
living and even maybe get something a little more special for Christmas
presents for my family say, naughty naughty fraud. You can earn
$80 beyond whatever benefit you then are taxed 70 cents in the dollar
for every dollar over that. They tell us how they want people to
get ahead and really make a go of it. Not really sure how that works.
Whereas a high position executive being paid over
a $100,000 a year can get a little wrap on the knuckles and a relatively
inconsequential fine. Then they are in another corporation six months
later ruling over thousands of people and (ir)responsible for unthinkable
amounts of money. Who is wrecking the country I ask you?
