Modding Page Introduced, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Desktop Pic, Kiwi Olympics... and writing.

Since I'm trying to get serious on this whole 3D Modeling thing, thought a good motivator might be to introduce a new page to THS. Not too much there at the moment, mostly just old entries put into a better spot... but eventually I'll be uploading screenshots of my work, and even further down track (when I be worthy) tutorials of my own to help others. While it is part of modding S.T.A.L.K.E.R. bear in mind that's only a single aspect of it all. Considering the initial text I got on the subject goes from bare beginnings to animation, I've got much to learn. In any case, if this area of things interests you then feel free to take a gander. There is also a link to the page on the mainpage.

The Olympic Games

We've been doing pretty good at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Super Saturday was exactly that, with I think six medals in one day. More recently Sarah Walker got boxed in in her final in the BMX. So many prangs in this sport. Hard core. Nothing is ever a sure thing. But hey, rock and roll New Zealand. And I can see Sarah getting a gold in London, no worries. Well, with some hard core training, as always. On 22 August we stood at nine medals, three golds, a silver and five bronze. Likewise, Ben Fouhy got a fourth in the K1 - 1000. In the K2 - 1000, Steven Ferguson and Mike Walker got a sixth, even though at one stage they looked to be on the cards for a bronze. On 22 August we stood at nine medals, three golds, a silver and five bronze. Per capita we are third in line in the medal earning stakes.

Olympic Games

But man alive, see the Jamacians on the track. Outstanding stuff from Usian Bolt. How fast can the man go? As I've said in my Diary, as Phelps is to the water, this man is to the land. Jamaica for a population of 2.7 million, and New Zealand, 4 million, well, we do alright eh.

Got a bit on the Writing section regards scriptwriting, and just how close I am on finishing HoA. Well, the first part. So close but yet so far. The Diary has quite a bit on the recent conflict in Georgia and the somewhat difficult resolution. Also got some really cool news - I got published again! [ More... ]

The mid semester break is not really. I've got scriptwriting assignments to see through and a presentation for another Film class just after we get back. Then I've got an idea on redesigning THS as well, for 2009... Might have to do a bit of culling back. I've used an old page on Swiss neutrality to give an idea of what things might look like.

Ultravox Revisited, Georgia, Learning 3D ...and a red rocket.

I've got a presentation coming up a few weeks down track... it will be on the Ultravox single Vienna. I've got the YouTube embed to bring back some memories for those of you who are old enough to remember. Of course this excludes the vast majority of my skool class mates :) It was released 15 January, 1981. Below is the 2001 cover version from Clawfinger, off their A Whole Lot of Nothing album. The song has been covered no less than five times since 1991.

Ultravox - Vienna

... and then there is the Clawfinger version... (yes, the guys that sung the potent anti-racism song "Nigger")

A lot has happened in Georgia, and as I type it seems hard to pinpoint from one hour to the next how things will resolve themselves. East meets West, political wrangling, useless supposed peace promoting institutions, and as always, people dying in the meantime. So well timed, around the Olympic games. Russia is now blockading Gori and occupying Poti. They certainly don't like being reminded of 1968. Additionally, it must be remembered just how long this has been going on in real terms - yet they choose now to act?

My Diary doesn't seem to have much on the Games... but I have been learning a great deal about 3D modeling. A new technical skill set which I hope to confidently add to my CV in the months ahead. Below is a model which you create in Introducing 3ds MAX 2008. The first tutorial involves a crib mobile... so no folks, it ain't all "guns".

My ex-15 Para mate had this posted on his website, so just had to pinch it and shove it up... Go hard the Maroon Mafia.

3Para

3 Para doing the business...

I didn't watch a great deal of the Olympic opening ceremony at the time, but did catch up yesterday with delayed coverage. There is a dilemma between using such events to emphasise issues, or to forget all the nasty stuff and celebrate the good points in life - we can struggle with that at the best of times. I would like to sway more towards the latter, but my realist leanings tend to have me writing Rants like the one on board this time around. It features some stuff which some Kiwis won't like, but hey, I live in New Zealand, and they haven't knocked on the head my capacity to use the Internet to voice my personal views...

Been crook recently, hit hard with the flu. A mate reckoned there was this one, like 48 hours - which I can lay claim to, on the very weekend, the Monday I had a essay due in... but then he reckoned it took 100 days to get over, coughing and carrying on... bugger that for a joke. Still, I'm okay now. Not 100% but can't complain and don't have the flu anymore. Won't be sick again for another four or five years now. Anyway, plenty of ups and downs and all-arounds on the Diary... which I finally caught up on.

19 days for the world wide release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky, the much awaited prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl. All those things of the original vision now realised by the sound of it. We will soon see. There is a tin box SE version being released once more, and I'll be up for that.

The only reason I can see for owning a PC... these fine games, and the capacity to work with Autodesk 3D Studio Max so I can learn this modding business. I'll be picking up my first book on the subject next week, and have been downloading plenty of tutorials. Real skill sets too, in 3D modeling, texturing and lighting, to get involved in some serious projects. From what I can tell so far, its going to be a long hard road, but one well worth it. Got a prospectus from the Auckland (ick) based Media Design School in regards some training in this area so I can get more skills for realising my vision - taking my world into the virtual...

But that won't be for a couple of years. Have to train up myself to have the skills to be accepted, plus working for at least a year and saving to pay my own way through it all. Hopefully by then I can get into a similar course here in Wellington, rather than have to go up there... Looking into the technical nature of this stuff, whether you play on your old original Playstation, are a hard core PC gamer or have a PSP in your bag, it really opens your eyes to the skills required by the artists who create these games. As for the programmers, I can't begin to even entertain that route! More about my thoughts on this on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. page.

Studies, V8 Supercars, Bob's Biography ...and violent hearts.

Certainly no real reprieve from study this week, next week or the following. Next week and the week after is a quick-fire grouping of assignments due. Have to keep on top of it and will need to a wee bit over the mid-semester break just to stay afloat. But that's what I'm there for.

Got to see two races of the Ipswich (Round 7) of the V8 Supercars Championchip this last weekend. Looking forward to Bathurst 1000 on the 12-13 of October. And by then, the second semester will be almost over...

V8 Supercars

Speaking of which, thanks to all those who have given their congrats over my A- for FILM 331. And now I find myself in 233 doing East Asian Cinema, HK (no the other one...) included. Some excellent films. Just as well I', studying it, otherwise no time for watching them! But I did manage to see Crimson Tide - an excellent submariner film, on the weekend.

Hong Kong Cinema

Still digging into Timothy White's Catch A Fire. Excellent read. It will be interesting to see what reviewers have to say. If you find yourself speaking Rasta for a few weeks after reading it, don't be surprised. My critical review of it for this first essay will be positive, for sure. So unlike my getting the book out of the library. Read my Diary to get the picture...

Congratulations Bro, on your fourth Pioneer addition to the family :) And of course, feel free to use the bow, that's what it's there for...

My thought the other day was...

A violent heart is far more dangerous than a violent body.

Maybe, vaguely, it has something to do with the Rants I have on board this time around.

I sent out a mass e-mail the other day to all those who needed it, and several who didn't, just regarding the new (slightly changed) URL for THS. For all these addresses which I have collected up in the last five or more years, amazingly only two bounced back.

Got a few pics on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. page regarding Clear Sky, one of the sort of scenery to expect, the other two, snapshots of the SE tin and the standard issue version - like the original. I have also provided a screenshot of my playlist...

Some utterly useless trivia for you now...120 million chocolate bars are sold in New Zealand every year. Get more go on Moro! :) Anyway, a few Diary entries, including an A- for FILM 331 Film Analysis.

But... When you hear stories like this, you really don't need any more inspiration... Top bloody notch. You want an example of commitment and courage - here it is right here;

Blind Special Forces Officer Pushes Limits

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (June 30) - When Capt. Ivan Castro joined the Army, he set goals: to jump out of planes, kick in doors and lead soldiers into combat. He achieved them all. Then the mortar round landed five feet away, blasting away his sight. <CONT.>

Violence, Society, Video Games... and a July calendar.

It could have been a Rant but it was just a moan really on the Diary... on the Falwasser case and what was shown on 60 Minutes. Totally unacceptable Police behaviour is simply being shoved aside. Well, we'll see I suppose. Suppose New Zealand authorities want the same sort of image as so many other countries around the world eh. It sure as heck doesn't get my vote. At least up till now I can say what I want online without getting a beating.

Got a July calendar on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. page. We can argue for years on the connection to violence and video games, but well, you might be better off asking All Blacks about violence. Not a good look. Not the sort of inspiration you want for your young ones is it?
